Steve and Sempre, a healthy German Sheppard, enjoy the outdoors after a large storm. To keep Sempre healthy and free from the B19 parvovirus, Steve takes her in for regular checkups at the local veterinarian’s office.

Canine parvovirus (CPV) is a very dangerous and contagious virus that affects unprotected dogs. Make sure you take your dog in for regular checkups to make sure they are in top shape.

The canine parvo virus is quite small as you can see from the electron microscope image below. The naming also reflects the size as "parvo" is Latin for small.

This is a VERY contagious virus that is transmitted orally.  Being a virus, they are unable to reproduce until they invade the a host cell, once they do, the cell bursts and transmits more virus particles into the blood stream. Incubation of this virus is usually 5-10 days. Proper medication and medical help usually leads to a quick recovery.
